We’re measuring spindle run out with a Bridgeport to rotate a spindle.
We’ve got a chuck, which is a precision-machined item, that we have chucked in here. We’re going to rotate this and use a MicroTrak 4 laser to look at the run out of the spindle as it rotates. And then we have a screen over off to the side here that’s running the micro track basic software.
We can actually look at the peak-to-peak deviation of the spindle. What we’re seeing here on the computer screen is the run out of the chuck and the spindle as it’s rotating. We can see at least two revolutions on the screen here, and what we also see buried under the once per rev signal from the spindle is what looks like noise. That noise is actually optical noise, as the spindle is rotating the laser light is fluctuating, and it creates this up and down signal on top of the once per revolution that can be filtered out with the built-in low-pass filter in the laser head.
In this case we’re spinning the spindle at 60 rpm, and we have our filter set to 100 hertz. Which is sufficiently high above the rotating speed that we don’t lose the once-per rev signal that we want to get and that’s our peak-to-peak run out that we’re interested in. The actual run out of the spindle, if we get rid of the optical noise, is 0.7 to 0.8 mils.
